Plasmodium vivax gametocyte in thin film. Male gametocyte (microgametocyte) has pink to purple chromatin fibrils surrounded by a pale halo and then blue cytoplasm and abundant brown granules throughout. Gametocytes appear in the blood 3-5 days after the start of the parasitaemia.
